In both process and presentation, Tschabalala Self’s work explores the boundaries of figuration. Self has sustained a practice wholly concerned with agency, embodiment, selfhood, and human flourishing. Through the syncretic use of painting, she constructs fully formed characters who, both individually and situationally, hold power over their self-presentation and external perception. Multiplicity and possibility are essential to Self’s practice and general philosophy.
